I dont want surgery but I have a 5cm ovarian simple cyst, any alternatives for it?

I have a 5cm simple cyst on my ovaries and it causes sharp pains from time to time. It has caused me to have 2 periods in 1 month and bleed heavily. MY Dr put me on birth control, does this shrink it or will it dissolve? What happens if it ruptures, do I just take a bunch of Advil and call my Dr the next morning? Anyone have this before?

I know of someone who had a simple cyst (I assume you are talking about a fluid filled type cyst) which ruptured. It was very painful and she was hospitalised but afterwards was okay again without surgery or other effects. The birth control may see the cyst reduce itself naturally although I would be worried about the pains you are getting. If it ruptures it is very painful. I have had a dermoid cyst rupture and it was extremely painful. No amount of advil did a thing to reduce the pain. A dermoid cyst is different though in that it won't reduce itself and has to be removed via surgery. If you get any severe pain I would not hesitate to call an ambulance.
Reply:Take your doctor's advice. I had one burst when I was 8 months pregnant, and thought I was going to die. And yes, the pill may indeed shrink the cyst, You may be able to find a doctor who will do a needle biopsy and just aspirate the thing, if its fluid filled. Look for one who does mastectomies and lumpectomies. They are the ones who do the needle biopsies and aspirations on breast cycts
Reply:They're quiet common. They usually go away in a month or two. If they don't, surgery is required and it's not bad.
Reply:You DO NOT want to experience this thing rupturing. You wanna talk about pain.... Advil will never even begin to phase what you will feel if it ruptures.
