What is the cause of the formation of a cyst or mass in dogs?

One of our dogs have formed some kind of mass under its chin and we observed that it's getting larger. At first, it looks like fluid was trapped under the skin but then it got bigger and formed a mass or cyst. What is the cause of this? What can we do to remove it?

My brother's spaniel has that. The vet was giving it steroids. I don't know the cause because I am not familiar with that vet, but it's not just your dog who has had that problem.





Cancers are usually very hard, so if it is softer it wouldn't be that. It might be an abscess or some sort of a lipoma or even a bite reaction.

1. an imbedded tick.


2. insect/snake bite


3. obstruction in the throat





I am sure there are many other causes. ALL of which should be checked out by a vet.
Reply:The most worrying part is that what type of cyst or lump it is. If its simple then no worries BUT if its cancerous ? sure you need to get it examined. Please visit vet immediately as its on crucial part of the body. Any gain in the weight of cyst would trouble the poor dog.
Reply:Go to your vet. There is a large variety of potential causes some benign some serious. Only your vet can tell you which this is.





More specifically to your question, cysts and abscesses are basically giant pimples. Very gross but not life threatening. If it IS a cyst or abscess your vet will lance it and possibly give you a script for antibiotics. There can be many reasons for such formations, ingrown hair, clogged pore, injury, or even just genetics.
Reply:take the animal to the vet. they are just like humans in that respect, these things just happen and there isn't any way to prevent it
Reply:Go see your vet immediatly. It could be a tumor and it could be cancerous, if it is indeed just a cyst and it's getting bigger it could be infected. If you had this thing on your face would you not go to your doctor asap? Why havent you taken your dog?
Reply:Is it possible that it is a fatty tumor? My shep/lab has tons of them. He is 12 years old/ Does it move around when you touch it? If unsure ask your vet. they can test it by drawing fluid from it to let you know if its anything to worry about.
Reply:Sounds like what my dobe had . I think it was called a hematoma (SP?) . Hot pack it a few times a day . Take a hot wet wash cloth and put on the mass a few times a day . If it doesnt go down , I would take him into the vet .
